We are excited to have joined the Planetary Health Alliance, a consortium of over 200 universities, non-governmental organizations, research institutes, and government entities from around the world committed to understanding and addressing global environmental change and its health impacts. Being a member of the PHA represents the Environmental Physiotherapy Association’s commitment to collaboration on some of the most urgent health, social and environmental challenges of our time.

About Planetary Health

Humanity is causing accelerated global environmental change. We are not only depleting natural resources but also generating massive amounts of waste and toxic pollutants, causing large-scale biodiversity loss and changes in our landscapes, the composition of our atmosphere, and the health of our oceans.

Planetary health is a field focused on characterizing and acting on the human health impacts of human-caused disruptions of Earth’s natural systems. Despite the hard-won public health gains over the past decades, we are increasingly challenged by degraded air quality, threatened food production, new infectious disease exposures, decreased access to fresh water, and new natural hazards. These lead to negative consequences for our nutrition, mental health, and susceptibility to injury and disease. It is therefore urgent that we take action on these planetary health challenges in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Global warming leads to even greater increases in various climate-related economic, sociopolitical, and health risks.

About the Planetary Health Alliance

The Planetary Health Alliance supports the growth of the field of planetary health. We are a consortium of over 200 universities, non-governmental organizations, research institutes, and government entities from around the world committed to understanding and addressing global environmental change and its health impacts.

To support the rapid growth of a robust, interdisciplinary field of planetary health, the PHA is focused on:

  • Building a global planetary health community that crosses sectors, disciplines, generations, and geographies;

  • Facilitating the training of the next generation of planetary health leaders through the development of mentorship opportunities and foundational open-access educational resources from primary to university levels; and

  • Mainstreaming planetary health science through broad public outreach and direct engagement with policymakers.
