As one of the first events following the joining of the Qatar University Physiotherapy program at the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences into the Environmental Physiotherapy Association’s EPT Agenda 2023 (now commencing it’s next, 2027 phase), a group of Qatar University physiotherapy students began an exciting venture that harmoniously blended the therapeutic benefits of exercise with the serene beauty of Qatar’s natural wonders.

The picturesque setting of the beach, where the sand meets the waves, provided the perfect backdrop for a multifaceted experience. The gentle waves, pristine sands, and fresh coastal breeze created an enchanting environment that elevated the exercise benefits to new heights. Led by enthusiastic physiotherapy students (Class of 2023), the exercise session that followed was not just a workout; it was a holistic experience.

As participants engaged in various physical activities, they had the opportunity to bask in the healing benefits of sunlight and vitamin D, further enhancing their overall well-being. The decision to conduct the session on a public beach underscored the program’s commitment to promoting health in the community. The beach, with its natural soundtrack of crashing waves and an endless horizon, played a crucial role in creating a unique atmosphere. The sounds of nature, combined with the soothing visuals, had a remarkable ability to reduce stress, clear minds, and promote mental well-being. Participants found themselves not only immersed in the physical advantages of movement and exercise but also rejuvenated by the therapeutic effects of the natural surroundings. After the session, all students expressed feeling relaxed.

This initiative was not just about physical health; it was a celebration of the environment and a testament to the Physiotherapy program’s dedication to holistic well-being. The students had the chance to do some breathing re-education and stretching exercises while feeling the sand and hearing the waves.

As we reflect on this unique outdoor activity, we celebrate the successful collaboration between the Physiotherapy program at Qatar University and the Environmental Physiotherapy Association. This venture has not only contributed to the physical and mental well-being of participants but has also left a positive impact on the community and the environment. Also, it was a learning experience to see how exercising in nature can add another dimension to the benefits of exercise and physiotherapy. A valuable lesson was learned, as we move forward to incorporate nature in the rehabilitation journey of patients and clients when possible. In the arms of nature, surrounded by the beauty of the beach, future physiotherapists took a significant step towards promoting a healthier and more sustainable future.
